Gautam Gambhir has stepped down as captain of Delhi for their upcoming Ranji Trophy season. Nitish Rana, 24 years old, will lead Delhi, with Dhruv Shorey “as his deputy”.
Delhi’s Ranji Trophy campaign begins on November 12 against Himachal Pradesh in a match that will also feature Ishant Sharma, currently recovering from a problem with his ankle.
Time to groom youngsters
Delhi selectors had asked Gautam Gambhir to captain in the recently-concluded white-ball campaigns in the absence of Ishant and Rishabh Pant (both had led Delhi in the Ranji Trophy last year). Instead, Gambhir suggested it was an opportunity for some of the younger members of the Delhi team to lead.
Time to pass the captaincy baton to youngsters, hence have requested the DDCA selectors not to consider me for that role. I will be in the background helping the new leader to win games @RajatSharmaLive

“Gautam has intimated the state team’s chief selector Amit Bhandari that he would like to opt out of captaincy. He suggested that someone younger be groomed for the job. Nitish Rana will lead the side and Dhruv Shorey will be his deputy.”
Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rajat Sharma told PTI.
Gambhir had also stepped away from captaining Delhi Daredevils in their faltering season in 2018, allowing Shreyas Iyer to take over. Gambhir himself vacated the position after Daredevils won just one of their first six games.
