Having had a series of underwhelming seasons, the Delhi franchise opted for a complete makeover ahead of the 2019 IPL season, by rechristening itself the Delhi Capitals. The players and fans alike will be hoping that this is a new beginning for a team that has never been short of talent on paper.
At the IPL player auctions in December, Delhi Capitals made several interesting buys, most notably Axar Patel, Colin Ingram and Hanuma Vihari. Yet, the most important addition to the quad has come in the form of Shikhar Dhawan, who was traded to DC in exchange for 3 of their players-Vijay Shankar, Shahbaz Nadeem and Abhishek Sharma. DC’s top order looks ominous now, with several quality Indian internationals in the line-up. As a result, the foreigners can make up the bowling contingent, which is an equally strong suit for DC, with the likes of Trent Boult, Amit Mishra, Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada.
The coaching management will again be led by Australian ace Ricky Ponting (head coach), and the newly roped in Sourav Ganguly, who will be the team advisor. It remains to be seen if this duo can inspire confidence and create magic in the Delhi Capitals’ dressing room. For a team that has been represented by some of the biggest names in cricket in the past (AB de Villiers, Kevin Pietersen, Mahela Jayawardene, Glenn Mcgrath, David Warner, Virender Sehwag), the failure to reach a single final in these 11 years, let alone win the trophy, is truly baffling. Will this be DC’s year? There is an excellent possibility, considering the array of talented players that DC has retained and bought at the auction this time around. This is a team that is no longer an underdog, has no real weaknesses, and one that could pose serious challengers to top contenders. Watch out, CSK and MI, for DC is coming..
Probable Playing XI:
